Welcome to the Langwarrin Tennis Club website. If you have any suggestions on improving the site or including additional information, please go to the About Us/Contact page and let us know. There are links to our Coach's website, the PTA and other useful sites at the bottom of this page. April 2012 Our latest newsletter has been mailed. Download it here. March 2012 Good luck to our Tennis Vic Pennant teams:
A great effort from our two senior teams who won their Grand Finals - congratulations to Mixed 3 (Lucy Chick, Michelle Ebblewhite, Tracey Euhus, Brett Kidman, Murray Chick, Ken Young, Mick Bennetts) and Mixed 4 (Robyn Mantel, Lynda Boulton, Dianne Murphy, Steve West, Mark Sage). Our juniors weren't so fortunate, with three teams (Loretta Thrupp, and Boys 3 Blue & 4 Blue) all going down in the GF. Also well done to our teams who made the finals: Mixed Secs 2 & 8, Mens Singles Secs 2 & 3, Junior Girls Secs 3, 4 (by 4 games) & 6 Blue, Junior Mixed Secs 2 & 3, Junior Boys Secs Les Moss Blue, 1, 2 White & 8 White (by 3 games). February 2012
The courts project is almost complete, with the only major outstanding item being the installation of a new meter box and associated electrics, which is scheduled for Friday 17th. The one slightly disappointing outcome is that it was not possible to level out all of the undulations as much as we hoped, particularly on court 4. The major depressions were filled, and the court meets the specifications of 3mm max depth (playing surface) and 6 mm (surrounds). The problems are two-fold:
We were aware of these problems in planning the project, but the only solution would have been to rip up all three courts, and lay crushed rock and new asphalt. However this would have been very expensive, and the courts would also have been out of action for a lot longer. Although we hoped for a better result, we knew it would not be perfect. At least the courts are much easier to sweep now, particularly with drains along all four boundaries.
January 2012 The January newsletter has been mailed, and you can download it here. The new courts are almost finished and will be playable by the end of the month. The fencing and concreting are all done. It is anticipated that the lighting works will be ffinished in the first week of February, allowing night tennis to resume from Monday 6th, but this will need to be confirmed nearer the time.
Happy new year to all. Progress has been good on the courts project since resumimg from the Christmas break. Fencing of courts 2 & 3 will be complete by 18th, and the adjacent external concreting is also finished. The new surface on courts 4 - 6 is being laid and completion is anticipated by Australia day, weather permitting. The remaining fencing and concreting should also be finished by then. The schedules for removal of the old light poles, and completion of the electrics, are yet to be confirmed but hopefully they will be all done by the end of the month.
December 2011 At the Christmas break, the project status is as follows: Floodlighting:
All luminaires installed atop the light poles;
All external trenchings in the vicinity of the existing switchboard arrangement have been backfilled to surface levels.
Upon resumption of the floodlighting works in early January, the Contractor will be looking at first removing the old light poles (which should have no impact on the works within the courts enclosure), and will then move straight onto the new switchboard arrangement and final connections with a view of having its job completed by around Friday, 20 January.
Court Civil & Resurfacing (commenced on Wednesday, 21 December):
South west corner of courts enclosure has been excavated (old asphalt removed) and re-asphalted, approx. area 4m x 17-18m - several very soft areas noted and dealt with by contractor;
Western side; excavated and new box drain partially installed (concreted into place) - to netline + extra 4-5ms;
Southern end; excavated in readiness for new box drain (old spoon drain removed) - the existing agi pipe is very close to the surface, approx. 200mm depth, and will need to be relaid;
Eastern side; old spoon drain removed and new box drain installed along the full length of the eastern side;
Northern end; old spoon drain removed and approx. 7ms new box drain positioned in place (eastern end) prior to concreting - the existing agi pipe is readily visible and only shallow laid;
Two asphalt strips laid at the netlines between Courts 4 & 5 and Courts 5 & 6 - restoration of areas excavated by electricians to facilitate boring operations; and
All old net posts removed, including the old concrete footings - large excavations protected by safety bunting.
It is anticipated that the civil works will take a further 2-3 days to complete, with the contractor due back on site early January.
All night tennis is now over for the year. Congratulations to the Tuesday and Wednesday winners: Tuesday Men : Boom Boom (Adrian, Ryan, Jarryd, Daniel & David) outgunned the A Rods Wednesday Mixed: Sedgeman (Kevin, Steven, Bev & Marie) were too good for Emerson In the second week of the project, new light poles are up, as are the new fence posts, and the new retaining wall is done. Fences are now complete on courts 6 & 7, with new top and bottom rails. They look great!
Courts 8 & 9 will be unavailable for most of the week of December 5th, while the fences are upgraded. Courts 4 - 6 after one day of the project.... November 2011 Congratulations to our Coach Peter Jenkins, who is currently listed at no. 3 in Australia in the Veterans Tennis rankings, and no.31 in the World (in his age group, of course). What's next Pete - the Aussie Open?? Night tennis is nearly finiahed for the year. Well done to our Grand Final winners: Monday Ladies: Burberry (Bec, Alesha, Mandy and Cassie) had a comfortable win over Chanel Thursday Mixed: Princes (Andrew, Haris, Michael, Cassie and Brittany) defeated Lotto's Just a reminder that courts 4, 5 & 6 will be unavailable from December 1st, until around end January - see details below. So we washed out Wednesday night tennis........
October 2011 The project to upgrade courts 4, 5 & 6 will begin on Thursday November 24th, when the retaining wall along court 6 will be demolished and rebuilt closer to the fence line. Court 6 will be unavailable during the day, but should be OK for night tennis and after hours use. Some electrical work for the new lights (which will not affect play) might start a little earlier. Full work on the project will start on Thursday December 1st, from when the three courts will not be available for play. The fences will be removed and all the asphalt repairs, drainage and concreting will hopefully be done before the Christmas break, along with replacement fenceposts and lighting work. Resurfacing of the courts will begin on January 9th, with the aim of having everything finished before competition resumes after the holidays. Some equipment will be stored in a container in the car park, and some in the clubhouse. The galvanised fences on courts 7 & 8 will probably be replaced in December, and those on courts 2 & 3 in January. All of this will be very dependent on favourable weather of course, and the schedule is very tight for the contractors. Information will be updated here on the website as it comes to hand, and we apologise for any inconvenience. If you haven't paid your membership yet, please do so as soon as possible. Remember, you must be a financial member to be eligible to play in competition. September 2011 Thanks to Peter and Lynn for such a great job (again!) running the Club Championships.Congratulations to our winners, and well done to the runners-up and all who competed. Hayley Gould won the Open Singles and Girls Singles for the third time, and James Dann repeated his 2010 wins in the Men's Open Singles and Boys Singles - both outstanding efforts.
We won two flags in the winter PTA Saturday competitions. Congratulations to Sean Dickson, Scott Ross and Tom Eddy for winning Mens Singles Sec 2. Tom finished the season unbeaten in his singles natches. Congratulations too to Dylan Brookes, Lance Cowan and Jamie Brookes for their win in Mens Singles Sec 4 - their second flag in a row. Well done also to Mixed Doubles Sec 3 and Mens Singles 4 for finishing runners-up. The juniors had a lean season, and no teams made it through to the Grand Final. August 2011 At the AGM on August 3rd, our outgoing Treasurer Robyn Mantel was thanked by the Committee for her outstanding contribution over the past 27 years. Janet Fraser has taken over as Treasurer, and we also welcome Paul Baker to the Committee. A motion to raise the membership fees was passed. The increase is the first for two years, and was made necessary by increases in the Tennis Vic registration fees. The new fee structure can be seen in the Membership section of this website. We're pleased to see that our courts upgrade project has been supported in this year's Council budget, and our intention is to execute the project over the summer break, starting in early December. July 2011 The July newsletter has been mailed. View it on line here. June 2011 Our Mid-Week Ladies Sec 5 team had a great win in their Grand Final. Congratulations to Marie, Sally Ann, Nicole, Heather, Helen and Jenny. Well done to the Sec 2 team who finished runner-up. Well done also to night tennis winners: Monday Ladies: Alley Cats (Dianne, Ruth, Sharon, Chris & Sophia) were too clever for Volley Girls Tuesday Men: Fed Express (Haris, Lisle, Michael, Steve & Brad) beat Raffas Wednesday Mixed: Crabs (Terry, Haris, Michelle & Cathie) were too snappy for Yabbies Thursday Mixed: Princes (Marie, Melanie, Kevin and Brendan), beat Babolats May 2011 The night tennis season is drawing to a close, with Wednesdays now in recess until August. Congratulations to premiers the Crabs (Terry, Haris, Michelle & Cathie), who beat Yabbies by just one game. April 2011 THe April newsletter has been mailed, and you can read it here. For the first time ( as far as anyone can remember), Langy juniors won both the girls (Loretta Thrupp) and boys (Les Moss) shields. A fantastic result, and congratulations to Caley Knox, Hayley Gould, Mikaela Kemp, James Dann, Jayden Cox and Josh Dewhirst.
James had a big Grand Final day, also combining with Dylan Hebblethwaite to win the seniors Section 2 singles. Also victorious were the Section 6 Singles (Dylan Brookes and Lance Cowan), and Section 2 Mixed Doubles (Tracey Euhus, Bev Eddy, Brett Kidman and Tom Eddy). Congratulations. March 2011 Saturday finals are underway, and we had a total of 20 Langy teams competing - 6 Seniors, 6 Girls and 8 Boys. Of these, four teams finished the regular season on top of the ladder. Four of the Senior teams have made it through to the Grand Final on Saturday April 2nd, as have three Girls and two Boys teams. Our Junior teams are playing at Frankston or Frankston East, and the Senior teams at Overport and Langwarrin (where our two Mens Singles 2 teams are fighting it out). Good luck to all! February 2011 On Feb 7th we presented our case to Frankston Council, for financing of our courts 4-6 upgrade project to be included in the 2011-12 budget. We received a favourable hearing, but there's still a long way to go before we'll know if we have been successful. Don't forget to submit your entries for the Winter season as soon as you can. January 2011 The January newsletter has been mailed, and you can view it on line here. With the new year we say many thanks to Kerry Gardeniers for her contribution as Mid-Week Ladies Coordinator, and welcome to Tracey Euhus who is stepping in to the role. Tracey can be contacted on 8787 7520 or 0409 318 400. Night tennis will be starting again in early February. There are some places available on Tuesday nights in the men's competition, so if you are interested, contact Ian on 0417 111 282.
